South Carolina Banned License Plates

South Carolina Banned License Plates

South Carolina (SC) DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) issues the license plates. SC also has banned vanity plates, which we are going to discuss in the next chapters.

Application Process

For application, you should go to the office and have the following for the registration:

  • Proof of the insurance of the vehicle
  • Certificate attesting the ownership
  • South Carolina valid driver’s license
  • Completed certification forms
  • Applicable documents for specialty, disability, or personalized plates
  • Emissions certification
  • Payment

Any resident with out-of-state autos should record them within 45 days after their arrival. The same refers to those who bought a new or a used one.

Fees

When you are about to list your car, you have to pay taxes and service charges together with the following:

  • Custom: e.g. antique, that cost $10.
  • Customization is $30.
  • Temporary ones will cost you $5.
  • The 2-year listing cost is $10 for motorcycles and 40$ for passenger vehicles.

Registration numbers

There are a variety of registration numbers:

  • Standard: has a white and blue background with dark blue letters.
  • Temporary: when people have a new auto and need to drive it legally through the enlisting process.
  • Specialty: has unique and individual designs according to the person’s taste and choice.
  • Disability: is for people with disabilities as its name already states. For this, however, the person should have permission and eligibility for such criteria.

Specialty type has different categories:

  • Occupational
  • Military
  • Sports
  • Charitable or non-profit
  • Collegiate
  • Classical car

SC Banned Vanity Plates

Vanity ones allow you to personalize them the way you want to. Nevertheless, you should follow some rules. Otherwise, the SCDMV may not approve it.

  • It should have up to 7 characters.
  • Characters can contain both numbers and letters.
  • You can include only the symbol “&”.

Like any other place, this State also has rules. If you want your choice to be approved, then make sure you do not go for these themes:

  • Politics
  • Religion
  • Sexual orientation
  • Government organizations
  • Extremisms

In case you use any of these topics, it will be denied. Regarding this point, you can make further comparisons with states like Ohio on our website.

Examples

Let’s see some samples that got rejected:

  • CHRIST: the word already proves why they banned it.
  • FBI: since it is a governmental body, it has been rejected.
  • 666: the combination of these numbers is associated with Satan, and it is biblical. Thus, it is denied.
  • WEEDS: it is not that proper to drive a car stating the word “weed”. Hence, the DMV rejected it.
  • MURDER: Since it is not wise to use this, we can guess why that choice will not work.

In conclusion, we can see that there are many options to apply for. They have their rules for approval. Therefore, choose it wisely.
