Employee Application Process

Licenses are issued by the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and are valid for one year. You can download the application form from their website. They need:

  • employment history
  • arrest records including traffic citations and other cases
  • the results of drug and alcohol tests
  • medical documents about physical and psychological character

Finally, the candidate signs a document approving permission to get information about him or her from various organizations. The form needs notarization.

Relevant Training

In general, candidates must pass a four-hour basic program. This program includes the role of the private sector, laws and patrol, first aid overview, resources, client service issues, etc. In addition to completing the above course, you must complete the gun training by a firearm trainer. Avoid using hunting rifles and shotguns. Besides that, there is an alternative basic course accepted by a well-known accrediting agency and acclaimed by SLED.

Two hours of orientation training by a company coach is also necessary. Everyone who finishes an alternative program of learning course will receive a card identifying his or her being a certified specialist. Thus, the duration of the learning program can last from 2 hours to 1 week (median time is 9 hours). It depends on the qualification you need.

In South Carolina, security officer registration is renewed every year. You should send an application for registration and renewal of permits at least 30 days, but not more than 60 days before the date of expiration. The expiration date is available on the card.

Costs may differ. As an illustration, the annual payment for an armed person is $110 and $65 for an unarmed person. Those who are initially registered as unarmed can be upgraded for $45. If the owner loses or damages his card, the fee is $20. The annual price for a private investigation business is $350.
